MALUMBRES PRELIMINARY REPORT ON 2005 VINTAGE ON 13 DECEMBER 2005

[ REPORT ON THE VINTAGES 1999-2003 ] | [ REPORT ON THE VINTAGES 2003 AND 2004 ]

Our vineyards experienced good development through the vegetative cycle in the year 2005 thanks to the favourable climatic conditions which resulted in a harvest of high quality. All grape varieties arrived in the Bodega in perfect condition and analytical values of the Wines correspond to a harvest of extraordinary quality.

The end of 2004 was characterized by a good withering, absence of freezing  and scarce rainfall. During the vegetative stop prior to March  there was little rainfall and some moderate snow, and rainfall continued  before and during the bud break in April. Budding was good and occurred at the average dates, that is an advance of about 10 days compared to 2004. Fertility was also good  with values of 1.5 bunches per bud.

Fertilization of the vine flowers was completed  by the middle of June, with our vineyards in an excellent state of vegetative health state, still some 10 days ahead compared to 2004.  Tempranillo and Graciano fertilized well but the Garnacha had some coulure.

Rainfall was moderate till the end of the fertilization, the total rainfall from January being smaller than average years, but the water stress of the plants was acceptable.

The veraison started at the middle of July and the cycle maintained the advance of about 10 days. At the end of August the state of vineyards was excellent  from both points of view: vegetation and health. Development of ripeness in our vineyards was correct after the drought during  July and August.

During the first days of September temperatures were moderate during the day and relatively cool  at night which caused the slow down of the ripening of sugars and was very positive for the phenolic ripening. After the first days of September days temperatures rose whilst nights remained relatively cold. There was no rainfall in September. We harvested from 12 to 29 September.
